Municipality Assen — City center in balance

Bench incorporating mini-stage and balancing beam

Pompplein in the center of Assen is a popular place where people sit down to take a break. The municipality of Assen and entrepreneurs' association Hartje Stad asked CM3 custom-made to design a new bench object that incorporates a mini-stage. The wooden bench also integrates a balancing beam which is part of a play route through the city.

Play route through the city

In consultation with the municipality of Assen and the local entrepreneurs' association, the designer came up with a wooden bench made of FSC Camaru and hot-dip galvanized steel. The stone-shaped bench, that measures 6.5 meters long and 5.5 meters wide, features a recess that was created to accommodate the tree, which provides coolness and shade on hot days. The bench also has a partial backrest.

A section of the bench serves as a mini-stage, on which small-scale performances and appearances can take place. Another special feature is the steel balancing beam (way finding), mounted on the edge of the bench. The bench is part of the play route called 'De pups van Mannes'. The play elements and accessories in the city center are connected by yellow paw prints. The balancing beam is also marked with the paw prints.
